Matt Riddle Eyes a Return to MMA in 2024
Former UFC fighter and current professional wrestler Matt Riddle has hinted at a potential return to mixed martial arts (MMA) by 2024. The 37-year-old athlete has sparked conversations within the combat sports community with his recent statements regarding a comeback to the ring or cage.
Riddle, who transitioned to professional wrestling after a stint in MMA, has been engaging with various organizations about a possible return to the sport where he first made his mark. While details of these discussions remain under wraps, Riddle's openness about the prospect has fueled speculation across the industry.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has reported that Riddle may have received offers from both bare-knuckle fighting promotions and the Professional Fighters League (PFL). These opportunities could pave the way for Riddle's re-entry into competitive fighting, adding another chapter to his diverse career.
Having left the UFC on a high note with a four-fight winning streak, Riddle faced some controversy due to two victories being overturned because of failed drug tests for marijuana. Despite this setback, his last appearance in MMA was a successful outing against Michael Kuiper at Titan FC in February 2014.
The UFC tenure ended with a public critique from Dana White, which Riddle believes played a part in shaping his 'bro' persona that fans have come to recognize in his wrestling career. He credits White's criticism with making him more relatable to the audience, inadvertently aiding his transition into professional wrestling.
As a free agent, Riddle has the flexibility to navigate his career path without contractual constraints. His journey in professional wrestling began with training in 2014 and an official debut in 2015. He quickly became a prominent figure on the independent circuit, capturing several titles along the way.
In 2018, Riddle joined WWE NXT and found success as he won the NXT Tag Team Championship with Pete Dunne. His momentum continued as he ascended to the main roster, securing the United States Championship in February 2021. Alongside Randy Orton, Riddle formed the popular team "RK-Bro," achieving the Raw Tag Team Championship on two occasions.
Despite his accomplishments in wrestling, Riddle maintains a connection to martial arts, training multiple times a week and holding a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. This dedication to combat sports was evident when he was spotted at the Jake Paul vs. Andre August boxing match in Orlando, signaling his continued interest in the fighting world.
"There's been a lot of talk. I've been talking to a couple of promotions," Riddle disclosed to MMA Junkie. "I don't want to get into it until it's official, but I think in 2024 there's a very big possibility that I get back in the ring or cage pretty soon."
Reflecting on his departure from the UFC, Riddle expressed gratitude towards Dana White, recognizing that White's outspokenness helped keep him in the public eye. Riddle's positive outlook extends to his past experiences in the UFC, where he feels he left behind a legacy of victory, including his post-UFC win at Titan FC.
Riddle's passion for competition remains undiminished, as he contemplates the physicality and challenge of fighting. "Pro wrestling is awesome, but I still want to get beat up. I want to have my exit. We'll see. Maybe somebody beats me up. Maybe I keep winning. Who knows?" he mused.
With his sights potentially set on a return to MMA, Riddle's career is a testament to the fluid nature of combat sports, where athletes often cross disciplines and find success in multiple arenas. As 2024 approaches, fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see if this multifaceted fighter will indeed make his anticipated return to the world of MMA.
