Sharks' Development Camp Highlights Celebrini's Debut
The San Jose Sharks' development camp on Tuesday morning was more than just a routine gathering for the team's prospects. It marked the much-anticipated debut of their first-ever No. 1 overall draft choice, Macklin Celebrini, at Sharks Ice in San Jose. At just 18 years old, Celebrini carries the weight of great expectations on his young shoulders, yet he seems unfazed by the pressure.
In the short span since his selection, the native of Northern California has already started to make an impression. "It's coming up. I'll make the decision pretty quick here. Just trying to enjoy this camp, and after that I guess it's time to make a decision," Celebrini remarked, contemplating whether to join the Sharks roster this season or return to Boston University for his sophomore year.
Celebrini, who moved to Northern California in 2018 and played with the Junior Sharks U-14 team in 2019, has clearly found a place in the hearts of Sharks fans. "It's nice to be wanted. It's been good. They were out there supporting today. From everything I've heard, they are some of the best fans in the league. I'm excited to start playing in front of them," he said, reflecting on the enthusiastic support he received during his debut practice.
Despite his youth, Celebrini’s hockey credentials are already impressive. As a freshman at Boston University, he netted 32 goals and added 32 assists in just 38 games, earning the prestigious Hobey Baker Award. This trophy, given annually to the best player in college hockey, attests to his extraordinary talent and potential. His skill was not lost on John McCarthy, head coach of the Sharks' AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda: "Really good. He was super competitive on pucks. I thought that's what stood out to me the most."
McCarthy further emphasized Celebrini’s maturity, both on and off the ice. "I think he is a mature kid. I know a lot of people [at Boston University], and talking to them about him, as impressive as he is as a player and his skill level, they're equally as impressed as a person. The way that he carries himself, the way that he goes about his business, it's high end, which is why he went first overall."
The Sharks, who endured a challenging season ending with a 19-54-9 record, are hoping to turn a new leaf with the young phenom in their ranks. Celebrini’s arrival, along with other strategic signings, is signaling a new direction for the franchise. "We're moving in the right direction. There's so many players getting ready to make their debut, especially with the signings that we've made. It's an exciting time," Celebrini acknowledged, embodying optimism and a forward-looking mindset for the team.
Adding another layer to his story is Celebrini’s familial connection to professional sports. His father, Rick Celebrini, serves as the vice president of player health and performance for the Golden State Warriors. This connection underscores the deep-rooted ties and understanding of professional sports dynamics within the Celebrini family.
The buzz around Celebrini isn’t confined to his stats or his potential roles within the team; it’s also about his presence. "It's been fun. It's been a long process throughout the draft and stuff, but now it's when the fun begins. You just get to skate, play hockey and just have fun with the guys," he shared, smiling through what has undoubtedly been a whirlwind period for the teenager.
As the Sharks' development camp continues, all eyes will remain fixated on this emerging star. The annual prospect scrimmage, set for Thursday, presents another opportunity for Celebrini to showcase his talents and edge closer to that crucial decision about his immediate future. His story is only just beginning, and the San Jose Sharks and their fans are eager to see how this new chapter unfolds.
John McCarthy, reflecting on Celebrini's journey and potential, succinctly sums it up: "I think he's a really, really talented, really good hockey player. As far as the other stuff, that's kind of above me."
Indeed, with the groundwork laid and the potential sky-high, Macklin Celebrini’s debut offers a beacon of hope for the San Jose Sharks as they navigate the new season.
