The Philadelphia Eagles have made a strategic move by signing versatile offensive lineman Mekhi Becton. Initially brought in to serve as a swing tackle for starters Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, Becton’s role has evolved rapidly due to unforeseen circumstances within the team's roster.
Stepping Up in the Midst of Adversity
With Tyler Steen sidelined by an unfortunate ankle injury, a vacancy emerged at the starting right guard position. During Becton's first practice with the starting lineup, he was tasked with the imposing challenge of neutralizing defensive stalwart Jalen Carter in 11-on-11 drills. To the team's relief, Becton showcased his prowess by effectively holding his ground.
Head Coach Nick Sirianni expressed his optimism about Becton's integration into the team, stating, "I'm looking forward to that. Mekhi has had a good camp so far and looking forward to getting him some work next to Lane [Johnson] and continuing to work forward with that."
Learning and Adapting
Despite not practicing during the initial days of training camp, Becton remained fully engaged. He utilized that time to absorb vital information and advice from his peers, a strategy that paid off once he stepped onto the field. "The first few days he wasn't practicing, but he was definitely in my ear the whole time and telling me what I was doing wrong. He's been a great help," Becton shared.
His adaptability and willingness to take on multiple roles have not gone unnoticed. Landon Dickerson, the Eagles' left guard, praised Becton's flexibility: "I think Mekhi is doing great. He's had to bounce around a few positions. We had some guys get banged up. Nothing different than what happens during the season, right?"
A Valuable Asset
With the ability to play both guard spots and serve as a tackle, Becton's versatility adds a significant layer of depth to the Eagles' offensive line. "We have a guy that can swing at both guard and tackle, can play both guard spots. That's a lot of value in the NFL. He's able to play four out of five positions," stated Dickerson, highlighting the importance of such a player in the league.
Mindset and Readiness
Becton's mindset and approach to his role have been clear from the start. "I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready. If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready," Becton said, emphasizing his readiness to contribute whenever and wherever needed.
Teams Await Tyler Steen's Return
The Eagles have yet to disclose the duration of Tyler Steen's absence, leaving Becton's immediate role somewhat fluid. However, this uncertainty has not deterred him from providing value to the team, even as a member of the second-team offensive line.
As the Eagles navigate their way through training camp and prepare for the upcoming season, Mekhi Becton's presence brings a measure of reassurance. His adaptability, readiness, and proactive approach have already made an impression on both the coaching staff and his teammates. Time will tell how his role will further evolve, but for now, Becton stands as a pivotal component in the Eagles' strategy moving forward.
