As the Commanders' training camp moves into its pivotal stages, the emphasis on precision and performance continues to heighten. Players are fine-tuning their skills, particularly in high-pressure situations such as red-zone drills.
Tuesday marked a significant day in the camp, being the sixth practice overall, with fans in attendance for the third time and the team donning full pads for the second time. The atmosphere was charged with energy and anticipation as players like Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota vied for attention and critical reps with the first team.
The Rise of Jayden Daniels
Jayden Daniels has been making waves, sharing first-team reps with seasoned veteran Marcus Mariota. During 11-on-11 sessions, Daniels showcased his arm strength and accuracy. In a striking play, Daniels connected with Olamide Zaccheaus on a deep ball up the right sideline, a pass that highlighted his ability to make big plays. Daniels also found Jahan Dotson along the sideline and delivered a solid throw to Terry McLaurin up the opposite sideline.
In the final team session of the day, Daniels capped off his performance by hitting Dotson once again and completing a touchdown pass to Zach Ertz. However, it wasn't all smooth sailing for Daniels, who experienced a bungled handoff with Jeremy McNichols and endured a series of missed throws. The young quarterback's consistency remains a work in progress, but his potential is undeniable.
Brandon Coleman's Dual Role
Offensive tackle Brandon Coleman played a versatile role, switching between the first and second teams and alternating between left and right tackle. His day was a challenging one, facing off against experienced veterans such as Dorance Armstrong Jr., Dante Fowler Jr., and Clelin Ferrell. Reflecting on his performance, Coleman noted the complexity of the defensive line's strategy in the league compared to college. "D-linemen in the league have a bunch of secondary and third moves. Their knowledge of what o-linemen do is so vast compared to college... That's stuff that I just have to engrain in my brain, like shit’s not over until the whistle blows," he remarked.
He identified key areas for improvement: "There's always like three points in my brain that I'm telling myself in the next period if I didn't do it well. Like today, it was my hands were pretty bad in the first period. I was like, 'Work on my hands, work on my balance, keep my chest up.'" Coleman's commitment to refining his technique and staying resilient under pressure is clear.
Defensive Standouts
On the defensive side, Mike Sainristil has been a constant force, not only in his starting role but also in the return game. Sainristil spoke about his work ethic: "Part of it is just my play style. I'm a guy that's gonna go hard until the whistle's blown. And then the second part of it is just getting myself to make that second nature for me, so that when it comes game time, I don’t even have to think about stuff like that."
Jer'Zhan Newton, another defensive player making an impact, got his first taste of first-team reps during this camp. Newton effectively demonstrated his skills, forcing McNichols to cut back during a play—a testament to his disruptive prowess on the field.
K.J. Henry and Javontae Jean-Baptiste also made their presence felt during practice, reinforcing the depth and versatility of the Commanders' defensive lineup.
Special Teams and Consistent Performers
In special teams, kicker Ramiz Ahmed impressed by hitting all his field goals during the team portion of Tuesday's practice, with successful attempts from as far as 51 yards, showcasing both accuracy and power. Ahmed’s reliability will be crucial as the team gears up for the competitive season ahead.
Among the most consistent performers in camp has been Jahan Dotson. Reflecting on his progress, Dotson shared, "I feel like I'm just getting more comfortable, and that's enabling me to play faster and faster. That's been a big emphasis for me." His burgeoning confidence and execution on the field are promising indicators for his role in the coming season.
As the Commanders’ training camp progresses, the blend of emerging talent and veteran poise paints a promising picture for the team's future. With each practice, players like Daniels, Coleman, Sainristil, and Dotson are etching their marks, driven by the shared goal of excellence.
