As the Los Angeles Clippers gear up for their training camp set to begin on October 1 in Honolulu, Hawaii, head coach Ty Lue exudes confidence about the readiness of star forward Kawhi Leonard. Lue has been in regular communication with Leonard and believes that the two-time NBA Finals MVP will be fully prepared for the camp.
"I speak to him all the time. He'll be ready for [Clippers] training camp. He's feeling good and I know he'll be ready for training camp," Lue affirmed.
Kawhi Leonard's Battle with Knee Problems
Leonard's recent seasons have been plagued by knee issues, which notably sidelined him for the final eight regular-season games last year due to inflammation. The injuries also kept him out of crucial playoff matchups against the Dallas Mavericks, a blow that the Clippers struggled to overcome.
These recurring knee problems have raised concerns about Leonard's long-term health and his ability to endure a full NBA season. However, his participation in a mini-camp with Team USA ahead of the Tokyo Olympics provided a glimpse of hope for Clippers fans. Lawrence Frank, the Clippers' president, was particularly impressed with Leonard's condition during these sessions.
"It was USAB's call, and I was, quite frankly, very disappointed with the decision. Kawhi wanted to play. We wanted him to play. I was there the first two practices. He looked very good. Participated, was a full participant in everything that they did," Frank expressed, reflecting on the decision to replace Leonard with Boston Celtics guard Derrick White for the Olympics.
Frank's disappointment was palpable as he continued, "I expressed to them, I really wish that they would have given Kawhi more time. We have the benefit of having been around Kawhi for five years to see his body and see where he's at. So, he looked good to me."
New Beginnings Amidst Key Departures
While Leonard's potential return brings optimism, the Clippers face significant challenges as they head into the new season. The departure of Paul George to the Philadelphia 76ers in free agency leaves a substantial void in the team. George's exit has sparked doubts about the Clippers' competitiveness, but Ty Lue sees this as an opportunity to defy expectations.
"When you lose a guy of Paul George's stature, instantly people [think] oh, they can't win or they're not going to be competitive. But that just challenges me even more. OK, people are counting us out or people don't think we're going to be good. That right there just gives me an extra dose of [motivation],” Lue remarked, showcasing his unwavering resolve.
A New Era in Clippers' History
The upcoming season marks a significant milestone for the Clippers with the unveiling of their new arena. The team will inaugurate this much-anticipated arena on October 23 against the Phoenix Suns, a momentous occasion that symbolizes a fresh chapter in the franchise's journey.
Despite the setbacks and departures, the Clippers are poised to face the uncertainties of the new season head-on. Leonard's health remains a key determinant of their success, but with strong leadership from Ty Lue and the collective resolve of the team, there's a palpable sense of anticipation for what lies ahead.
As the Clippers assemble in Honolulu for their training camp, the road to redemption begins. With Leonard's expected return and the winds of change sweeping through the franchise, the 2023 season promises to be a compelling narrative of resilience, determination, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
