Joel Embiid Signs Three-Year Max Extension with 76ers
Joel Embiid has reaffirmed his commitment to the Philadelphia 76ers by signing a three-year max contract extension valued at $193 million, ensuring the All-Star center remains with the team through the 2028-29 season. This new deal not only secures Embiid's future in Philadelphia but also underscores the organization's determination to surround him with a championship-caliber team.
By the time his contract concludes, Embiid will be 35 years old, having spent his entire career with the 76ers. The contract includes a player option for the final year, a strategic move that allows Embiid to control his career trajectory as he approaches his mid-30s. Notably, Embiid declined a player option worth $59 million for the 2026-27 season under his previous deal. Instead, under the new extension, he is set to earn an estimated $59.3 million that season, with his salary rising to approximately $64.3 million in the 2027-28 season. The player option for the 2028-29 season is valued around $69.1 million.
Embiid’s projected earnings through the end of the contract extension would push his total career earnings past the $500 million mark, a significant milestone that reflects not only his value to the 76ers but also his standing in the league as one of the premier talents. His estimated earnings over the next five years alone stand at a staggering $299.5 million.
A Statistically Dominant Force
Last season, Embiid put up MVP-caliber numbers, averaging 34.7 points, 5.6 assists, 11.0 rebounds, 1.7 blocks, and 1.2 steals per game. These incredible statistics, coupled with a usage rate of 38.7%, showcase his all-around impact on the court. Embiid's dominance has not gone unnoticed; he has been selected for seven All-Star Games, five All-NBA teams, and three All-Defensive Teams. His recent accomplishments include winning a gold medal with Team USA at the Olympics in Paris, further solidifying his status as one of the top players in the world.
A Reshaped Roster
This offseason has been transformative for the 76ers. They have demonstrated their commitment to building a contender around their franchise star by signing Paul George to a four-year max deal and securing Tyrese Maxey on a five-year max contract. These two key acquisitions have helped the 76ers amass approximately $715 million in future salaries committed to Embiid, George, and Maxey.
In addition, the 76ers have revamped their roster with key additions, including Caleb Martin, Andre Drummond, Eric Gordon, Reggie Jackson, and Guerschon Yabusele. They have also brought back Kelly Oubre Jr. and veteran point guard Kyle Lowry. The decision to re-sign K.J. Martin with a contract designed to be a trade asset near the deadline indicates the team's strategic planning for future flexibility.
Despite their notable regular-season success, with only the Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics, and Denver Nuggets winning more games since the 2017-18 campaign, the 76ers have repeatedly fallen short in the playoffs, failing to advance past the second round in recent years. This latest roster overhaul signifies a fresh attempt to break that trend and compete for an NBA Championship.
A Deep Connection with Philadelphia
Embiid’s commitment to Philadelphia extends beyond the court. "Philadelphia is home. I want to be here for the rest of my career. I love this community and everything you've given me and my family," Embiid expressed, echoing his deep connection with the city and its fans. "There is a lot more work to do. You guys deserve a championship, and I think we're just getting started!"
Philadelphia 76ers Managing Partner Josh Harris shared a similar sentiment, emphasizing Embiid’s importance to the franchise. "Joel has cemented himself as one of the greatest Sixers of all time and is well on his way to being one of the best players to ever play the game. We're ecstatic that this extension keeps him and his family in Philadelphia for years to come."
Harris continued, "Joel is a great family man, leader, and person. He is an elite two-way player with a combination of size, strength, and athleticism that this league has rarely – if ever – seen. He is integral to this franchise's quest for another NBA Championship, and we are honored that he continues to choose this organization as his NBA home."
Reflecting on his journey, Embiid remarked, "I started a Sixer and want to be right here for the rest of my career. I had no idea when I was drafted as a 20-year-old kid from Cameroon how lucky I was to be in Philadelphia."
Determined to deliver success to his adopted city, Embiid concluded, "I want to thank Josh, David, and the entire organization. Philadelphia is home and it's time to bring this community an NBA championship."
With Embiid locked in, a retooled roster in place, and a renewed sense of purpose, the Philadelphia 76ers are geared up for what promises to be a thrilling era in their quest for NBA glory.
