From Cut to Clutch: The Rising Star of Tyrese Haliburton
Tyrese Haliburton, the Indiana Pacers' standout player and current member of Team USA, has been turning heads on both the national and international stages. Reflecting on that time, Haliburton said, "They never said that I was cut, but my parents told me that it was essentially like, 'He can come if he wants to.'" The emotional toll of this rejection was palpable. “I left in tears because I was so embarrassed of what was going on,” he recalled.
However, Haliburton's drive to succeed was unshaken. He joined Wisconsin United, an AAU team based in Milwaukee, which meant frequent three-hour round trips from his home in Oshkosh. This dedication caught the eye of Wisconsin United's coach, Bryan Johnikin. In a memorable practice session, Johnikin used his 3-year-old grandson to demonstrate Haliburton’s low release point, a unique aspect of his shooting style that begins with the ball in front of his chest and ends in a catapult-like motion with significant sidespin.
While his shooting form might seem unorthodox to some, Haliburton’s performance on the court speaks for itself. "To the average fan, or anybody who plays, obviously it isn't textbook. But there's no denying how effective it is. It's straight cash, is the best way I can put it," noted Pacers guard TJ McConnell.
Indeed, Haliburton’s shooting efficiency is remarkable. Over six seasons spanning college basketball at Iowa State and the NBA, he has shot below 40% from behind the arc only once. This exception occurred last season when he hurriedly returned from a hamstring injury, affecting his usual precision.
Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 185 pounds, Haliburton is a towering presence on the court. Yet, his physical attributes are just one part of the equation. "Because I don't ever want to get back to a place like that," he stated, underscoring his resolve to keep pushing forward.
