Derrick White's Unexpected Call to Team USA Adds New Chapter to Illustrious Career

As Derrick White took to the practice courts on Sunday, he marked the beginning of yet another unexpected chapter in his basketball journey. Arriving at 2:30 a.m. after a long flight from the U.S., White stepped up to replace the injured Kawhi Leonard, pushing aside plans for a family vacation in Cabo.

The call-up brings back memories of 2019, when White found himself in a similar situation. During that year, he secured the final roster spot for Team USA's World Cup campaign in China after being part of the Select Team. Back then, higher-profile guards like De'Aaron Fox and Trae Young had withdrawn, opening the door for White to join the senior team at the last minute. Reflecting on his journey, White shared, "It was crazy going from the Select Team to the World Cup team, and I just think now I've just continued to get better and better and so feel much more comfortable. I feel (now) like I did back then and I'm just excited to be here."

A Stellar Season with the Celtics

White's recent activities underscored his rising profile. Fresh off a four-year, $126 million contract extension with the Boston Celtics, White celebrated the team's NBA title just last month. A season highlighted by his defensive versatility and high-impact plays found its crescendo in that championship victory.

The journey to Team USA this time came while White was in his hometown of Parker, Colorado, where he was conducting his annual basketball camp. Yet, the call from Team USA was one he was ready to answer. Reuniting with Celtics teammates like Jrue Holiday and Jayson Tatum, as well as former team advisor Jeff Van Gundy, now an assistant with Team USA, White quickly adapted to his new setting.

Building Chemistry

Tatum expressed his excitement about White’s involvement, saying, "I haven't seen D-White since the parade, so excited to have him here. He'll bring some championship DNA to this team." It's this championship experience, along with his defensive prowess and adaptability, that makes White a valuable asset for Team USA.

The Road Ahead

Forward Kevin Durant, recovering from a strained calf, will miss Monday's exhibition game against Australia, underscoring the need for players like White. Coach Steve Kerr announced that Durant did not have contact in practice, instead focusing on shooting drills and rehab work.

Despite the whirlwind arrival and immediate contributions required, White's story continues to be one of resilience and readiness. As Team USA prepares for critical matchups, having a player of White's caliber—one who has proven time and again his ability to step up when it matters most—will be paramount.

White's narrative, from the 2019 World Cup to this latest call-up, builds on a career marked by seizing opportunities and making the most of them. As the team gears up for further challenges, White's presence will indeed be crucial, bringing defensive tenacity and a championship mindset to a squad aiming for the highest honors on the global stage.
